Message from MINT’s owners Patrick and Melissa John

Loyal MINT members,

The last 12 months have been a roller coaster for all of us. With the light at the end of the tunnel, we have two big announcements.

First, MINT’s 14th Street studio will not be reopening. The devastation of the pandemic – a full year and counting without classes in that studio – created an unsustainable situation. The landlord was simply not willing to work with the situation any longer, and we had to determine an exit plan.

While it is disappointing to see that studio close, MINT made several important advances due to the existence of that facility. First, a new MINT leader emerged in Lindsay Grunwald, who will remain as MINT’s Programming Director. In addition, several key instructors including Braegan, Myke, and Enrique stepped up to the challenge of that facility’s increased programming focus and will carry their amazing skills and talents to MINT Dupont and our continued virtual class programming. New programs MINTRow and MINTBoxing will launch at MINT Dupont, and we are remodeling the Intensity Studio to offer an elevated experience within our popular Power Playground and Power FLEX formats.

These changes only further our core mission which goes back to the brand’s inception in 2004; Quality over Quantity.

Our second big announcement is that we have worked with our landlord at MINT Dupont on a long-term agreement. Our landlord has been flexible, understanding, and is committed to MINT’s continued success. We are so thankful to have worked through this challenging time.

Outdoor classes are back!

As the days get longer and the temperatures get warmer, MINT will begin offering regular weekly outdoor fitness classes. Grab your mat and a water bottle and get ready to break a socially-distanced sweat at Marie Reed Field starting the week of March 15th! Our current class capacity is capped at 15 to allow for safe social distancing and accommodate the government-mandated guidelines. These classes are popular so we’re offering a waitlist. Clients will be notified by email if they’re moved from the waitlist to the class list.

Class Descriptions

  • Power Playground: MINT’s signature total-body, physically-distanced, outdoor circuit class is designed to increase your cardio endurance and strength training through a variety of bodyweight exercises. 
  • Power FLEX: MINT’s signature total-body, physically-distanced, outdoor strength class helps you flex your way to lean muscle mass gains through a sequence of exercises using a small amount of workout equipment in a fun and challenging environment.
  • Power Flow:  MINT’s physically-distanced yoga class in the fresh air. This all-level flow will leave you feeling more focused and flexible after an hour of energizing postures and mindfulness techniques. 

All classes: Look for the MINT instructor near our green cones.

Mask Requirement: As a part of MINT’s ongoing efforts to protect the health and safety of our clients and staff, we ask you to wear a mask or face covering upon entering and exiting your mat space during outdoor classes.

Meet MINT Personal Trainer Mary Dorsch

When Mary first moved to DC, she was searching for a job in special education. She ended up taking some time off to figure out what her passions were and what she wanted out of a career. Mary found herself spending a lot of time in the gym, which led to her itching to learn more about the “how” and “why” behind movement and exercise. 

She enrolled in personal training coursework to further her education, but then couldn’t imagine not sharing this knowledge and helping others. She got certified through NASM, started training at MINT in 2014, and never looked back.

Mary’s training style is client-focused, thorough, strong, and quiet. She tries to understand everyone she works with so that she can provide them the optimal experience. Each session is the result of client-specific programming, with special attention to goals, needs, and preferences. She also prioritizes long-term health, endurance, and building relationships.

“I believe that during each session, the client is the priority,” she said.  “I engage with them to determine exactly what they need and discover how I can offer solutions in ways that are engaging, fun, and productive.”

She enjoys helping people push past their self-imposed limits. Mary motivates clients to challenge themselves while remaining attentive to any limitations or muscular imbalances that need to be considered. As a personal trainer with a passion for motivating people to stay active, she strives to change people’s perspectives on fitness. 

Mary is also a nutrition coach and a certified life and health coach – which allows her to combine her skills as an educator, her passion for others’ wellbeing, fitness and nutrition expertise, and strength training experience to further benefit others.

Her advice to anyone interested in training for the first time: “Put us to the test! Try it out and have some fun!”

When she’s not working, she enjoys cooking, weightlifting, or advancing her education. She loves living in such a city that you can get around by walking, running, or cycling. She also enjoys eating outdoors, running around the monuments at the mall, and hiking the Billy Goat Trail. Her favorite restaurants in DC are Habesha and Little Sesame.

Fun fact: Mary was a competitive bodybuilder for two years, competing throughout the Northwest in the figure division.
