Summer is a great time to be active. Longer days allow more opportunities for outdoor activities like biking, running, swimming, volleyball, and more. But with summer comes the arrival of high temperatures and even higher humidity – conditions that can make it more challenging to stay active and even be dangerous without proper precautions. Exercising in hot weather places additional stress on the body because it must work harder to regulate its temperature, breathing, and heart rate. The good news is that summer exercise can still be safe and enjoyable with a few easy adjustments.

Pivot to the gym

MINT is here for you! Of course, we understand that many of our members enjoy the outdoors, but our cool, air-conditioned space is open for you with tons of classes, equipment, and training support. Consider moving your higher-intensity sessions indoors, out of the heat and direct sun. Push the pace and weights at MINT, then use the strength and endurance you build here on your other favorite activities.

Adjust your timing

Early mornings and evenings are typically cooler, and therefore safer for outdoor exercise. Midday heat can quickly increase the risk of heat stroke, sunburn, and other issues. Exercising during cooler hours is recommended in the summer months.

Hydration is key

Drinking enough water is essential in hot weather, especially if you’re sweating more than usual. Waiting until you already feel thirsty might mean you are dehydrated. Electrolyte supplements can help replace minerals lost through sweat. Consistency is key as well – make sure that your water consumption is happening regularly throughout the entire day, not just before and after exercise (though that’s important too!).

Pay attention to conditions

Summer can produce all kinds of unsafe conditions for exercise. Be sure to pay attention to the heat index, UV index, and weather report.

Use sun protection

If you’re going to be outside, be sure to apply (and reapply!) sunscreen, wear sunglasses, and wear appropriate clothing like a hat and lightweight, breathable fabrics.

While summer exercise requires extra awareness, it can also be fun, motivating, and beneficial. With appropriate preparation and attention, it’s possible to enjoy safe and effective workouts throughout all seasons.

What’s your favorite way to exercise in summer? Do you like to hit the gym or take to the roads/pools? Let us know how we can support your fitness through the warmer months!
