Meet Featured MINT member, Julia B!

Featured MINT Member, Julia B.
Featured MINT Member, Julia B.

MINT member since:

January 2016

Which MINT location is your favorite?

MINT Dupont

Favorite type of exercise?

Running, swimming, strength training, yoga, cycling, triathlons, p90x

What is your favorite exercise?

Deadlifts

What is your favorite group fitness class at MINT? Why?

PowerPlayground because it opens my eyes to exercises I wouldn’t have normally pursued. Plus, every workout is different so it constantly keeps you guessing what’s next.

Who is your favorite MINT trainer/instructor/concierge and why?

Paige Fetzer because she gave me advice about my first triathlon and always managed to check in on how I was doing! It would be wrong of me, however, if I didn’t give a special shout out to Dru Ryan, Liz Harvey, and James Parker Ashley for teaching classes that are sure to leave me humbled, sore, and inspired.

What motivates you to hit the gym and stay healthy?

There’s nothing more satisfying than setting a long-term goal and achieving it. I’m passionate about endurance racing not only because it tests my mental and physical limits, but it’s something for me to focus on outside of work and all the stress that comes with it.

Why do you love MINT?

The diversity and number of MINT classes make it so accessible for journalists like me who operate on crazy schedules.

Keep rockin’ it, Julia! You’re #MondayMotivation for us all!

November 7, 2016 by mint-sk

HEADS UP! We’ve got some exciting improvements happening at MINT Dupont this fall. pparea

Here’s what we’re doing:

  • A dedicated INTENSITY Studio will be built by swapping the Power Playground and Cardio Equipment at MINT Dupont
  • A larger, more open stretch area will be created in front of the new cardio area. The circuit will be moved during the week of November 14 (during the daytime)Please note that several very low-use circuit/cable pieces will be removed (back extension, bicep curl, seated leg curl, and step-up)
  • Locker room locks will all be replaced by January 1
  • Circuit equipment pads are being replaced two at a time; any single piece of equipment should only be down for one-week (max) between the dates of November 7 and December 31.

Here’s how it will affect you:

  • MINT Dupont will be closed over Thanksgiving weekend to complete the Intensity Studio. (Closed from 8pm Wednesday, November 23 and reopening 5am Monday, November 28.)
  • Good news! Downtown will be open during those days and we’re providing a transportation subsidy through Uber!
  • MINT Downtown will be open on Thanksgiving Day (11/24) from 7am-4pm and the day after Thanksgiving (11/25) from 7am-7pm. Regular hours resume Saturday (7am-9pm) and Sunday (8am-8pm).
  • To make it easier for you… we’ll refund your first $5 for taking an UBER to MINT Downtown for your workout.

 location-downtown

Uber transportation subsidy conditions:

  • Current active members only (account must be current)
  • Trip must be taken within MINT Downtown hours from the front of MINT Dupont directly to the front of MINT Downtown using only UBER.
  • Member must have checked in at MINT Downtown within 10 minutes of trip ending.
  • One way south only, one trip maximum per day.
  • Email your detailed UBER receipt(s) with map showing the route to accounting@mintdc.com before 6am Monday, November 28 and we will credit your card on file. Receipt must contain the route information per above.
  • Please understand that we cannot make any exceptions to the above conditions. Enjoy!

Thanks for your patience during these improvements!

Barre and Benefits for Men

October 20, 2016 by mint-sk

A few weeks ago I took my first Barre class ever.  I know, as popular as the format is at MINT, this was long overdue. As a guy who has been lifting since age 14, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  I love yoga, so figured that gave me some level of preparation, which turned out to be accurate, somewhat.

I was the only guy in a class of about 12, but it didn’t feel intimidating, mainly because Kathryn was very welcoming of everyone and the other participants were, thankfully, more into their own workouts than concerning themselves with the dude who felt a little out of place.  That feeling quickly disappeared as we started; the class kept moving which is always my preference.  Because each move was well explained, following along was straightforward, and although the work was definitely not easy, having a weight training background was an asset.

This was NOT ballet!  The angles at which my legs and body moved were unfamiliar, challenging deep muscle fibers in a new way, and proving much more of a core workout that I anticipated.  My legs were literally shaking by the end, a humbling experience after having squatted over 400lbs years ago.  Like yoga did years ago, I can see how Barre as a program can continue to expand its reach to attract a large variety of those seeking diverse fitness experiences.

October 2, 2016 by mint-sk

Calling all MINT yogis! We’re excited to announce FIVE new yoga classes, all of which will start this weekend (October 8 and 9).

The first three classes, which will take place on Saturdays, are geared towards young families at MINT (prenatal yoga and MINTkids classes!) The next two classes, which will happen on Sundays, are for yogi newbies and yoga lovers who need some extra time to sleep in on Sundays! Read on for more details!

NEW on Saturdays:

  • Mamas at MINT – Prenatal Yoga – Sunday class recently moved to Saturday at 9 in the main studio at MINT Dupont with Kate Miller. Prenatal yoga gives mamas the important time and space to relax and feel more comfortable with their changing bodies, as well as to deepen the growing relationship with their baby. This class is open to all levels of yoga experience, during any stage of pregnancy. Each class includes alignment based yoga instruction to help with the common aches and pains associated with with being pregnant. While building strength and flexibility in the body, concentration and mindfulness techniques will help prepare for birth and parenthood. This class is lead by Kate Miller, certified prenatal yoga teacher, professional birth doula and childbirth educator. As a birth worker, Kate weaves her knowledge of comfort measures and laboring techniques into her classes. If you’re expecting, you won’t want to miss this class to help support your pregnancy, birth and baby!
  • MINTkids: Yoga for Movers and Tots (crawling – age 4) – new time, new location, new teacher! Saturdays, 10:15 am in the new Barre Studio at MINT Dupont with Moriah Childers. Yoga for Tots is a class for crawlers, movers, and preschoolers along with parent or care-giver. Explore yoga together! Learn yoga songs, games and poses that you will enjoy together and be able to practice at home! For children from crawling to age 4.
  • MINTkids: Yoga for Big Kids (age 4 to 6) – new class for MINT’s slightly older kiddos. Saturdays, 11:15 in the new Barre Studio at MINT Dupont with Moriah Childers. Yoga for Big Kids is a class for kids around 4 years old and up with a care-giver. Older siblings are welcome, but please let your instructor know first. Explore yoga together!
