Meet featured MINT member, Shaila!

Shaila M

MINT member since:

April 2016

Which MINT location is your favorite?

MINT Dupont

Favorite type of exercise?

Strength training, yoga, pilates, barre, dance cardio, cycling, playing sports, swimming

What is your favorite exercise?

Hiking with the dog

What is your favorite group fitness class at MINT? Why?

Barre-Lates! But also love the theme-ride spinning classes (Calvin Harris vs Taylor Swift? Keep em coming!!)

Who is your favorite MINT trainer/instructor/concierge and why?

Everyone has been great.

What motivates you to hit the gym and stay healthy?

I’m seeing results! After years sitting at my desk, working 14-hr days and living on takeout, I made a commitment to take better care of myself, and my MINT membership is a huge part of that. I deserve this. I need this.

Why do you love MINT?

It’s a great gym – never too crowded, clean (this is impt), nice vibe, interesting classes and very convenient for me. All this helps make it a good habit.

Keep it up, Shaila! You’re serious #MondayMotivation.

Which MINT location is your favorite?

MINT Dupont

Favorite type of exercise?

Running, swimming, strength training, yoga, cycling, triathlons, p90x

What is your favorite exercise?

Deadlifts

What is your favorite group fitness class at MINT? Why?

PowerPlayground because it opens my eyes to exercises I wouldn’t have normally pursued. Plus, every workout is different so it constantly keeps you guessing what’s next.

Who is your favorite MINT trainer/instructor/concierge and why?

Paige Fetzer because she gave me advice about my first triathlon and always managed to check in on how I was doing! It would be wrong of me, however, if I didn’t give a special shout out to Dru Ryan, Liz Harvey, and James Parker Ashley for teaching classes that are sure to leave me humbled, sore, and inspired.

What motivates you to hit the gym and stay healthy?

There’s nothing more satisfying than setting a long-term goal and achieving it. I’m passionate about endurance racing not only because it tests my mental and physical limits, but it’s something for me to focus on outside of work and all the stress that comes with it.

Why do you love MINT?

The diversity and number of MINT classes make it so accessible for journalists like me who operate on crazy schedules.

Keep rockin’ it, Julia! You’re #MondayMotivation for us all!

Barre and Benefits for Men

October 20, 2016 by mint-sk

A few weeks ago I took my first Barre class ever.  I know, as popular as the format is at MINT, this was long overdue. As a guy who has been lifting since age 14, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  I love yoga, so figured that gave me some level of preparation, which turned out to be accurate, somewhat.

I was the only guy in a class of about 12, but it didn’t feel intimidating, mainly because Kathryn was very welcoming of everyone and the other participants were, thankfully, more into their own workouts than concerning themselves with the dude who felt a little out of place.  That feeling quickly disappeared as we started; the class kept moving which is always my preference.  Because each move was well explained, following along was straightforward, and although the work was definitely not easy, having a weight training background was an asset.

This was NOT ballet!  The angles at which my legs and body moved were unfamiliar, challenging deep muscle fibers in a new way, and proving much more of a core workout that I anticipated.  My legs were literally shaking by the end, a humbling experience after having squatted over 400lbs years ago.  Like yoga did years ago, I can see how Barre as a program can continue to expand its reach to attract a large variety of those seeking diverse fitness experiences.
